The aim of this article is to examine the role of the Aegean region in the history of the development of writings. In this region, as early as the beginning of the second millennium BC, there was a certain aspiration to create their own exclusive scripts, which can be thought of as the preparatory stage in a quest for something new.
It can be asserted that in the Aegean Sea basin, the scripts have gone through all stages of evolution – starting from the Cretan Hieroglyphic script and culminating in the Greek phonetic alphabet.
Nowadays, the Greek writing system maintains its existence with some variations. It can be said, that the innovation, elaborated by the Greeks in the development of their writing system, reached, using the favorite term of Aristotle, the Telos, such perfection that it cannot be given up even by languages, which from the phonetic point of view have significantly parted from the Greek alphabet.
